the tyler mesh size range begins with the largest screen opening. a size 2 1/2 mesh has a width of 8 millimeters while a size 3 mesh has openings of 6.73 millimeters. as the openings become smaller the two scales remain similar but the mesh size numbers do not match exactly.
for example if the particle size of a material is described as 4 +40 mesh then 90% or more of the material will pass through a 4mesh sieve particles smaller than 4.76 mm and be retained by a 40mesh sieve particles larger than 0.420 mm.
